About the Department
Chemistry plays a pivotal role in the creation of new substances by identifying the structure and properties of atoms and molecules, the most basic elements of matter, and systematically interpreting their changes. Therefore, chemistry is a core discipline in the fields of natural sciences and engineering with deep connections with neighboring disciplines along with the development of chemistry itself. Chemistry is essential in various fields, such as creating materials with new functions through chemical reactions and contributing to environmental preservation by converting harmful substances into harmless substances. Chemistry has a large role to play in biotechnology (BT), nanotechnology (NT), and energy and environmental technology (ET), which are currently attracting a lot of attention. The sub-majors of chemistry can be broadly divided into organic chemistry, physical chemistry, inorganic chemistry, analytical chemistry, biochemistry, and materials chemistry, and this major provides systematic lectures on the above sub-majors from basic to advanced courses.
Major Course Guide
Year 1 │ General Chemistry & Lab 1,2
This is a one-year course that provides an introduction to basic chemistry. This course covers the fundamental principles of chemistry, including observation, measurement, classification of matter, atoms, molecules, chemical bonding, kinetics, and thermodynamics.
Year 2 │ Organic Chemistry 1,2
Carbon-containing substances (organic substances), the principles of bonding, and how reactions work.
Year 3 │ Inorganic Chemistry 1,2
This course is designed to provide a fundamental understanding of inorganic matter, the principles of bonding and reactions. Topics include molecular orbital theory, the formation of solids and their properties, and the field of organometallics.
Year 4 │ Organic Materials Chemistry, Nanomaterials Chemistry, Electronic Materials Chemistry, Polymeric Materials, Electrochemistry, Energy Chemistry
Advanced topics in all areas of chemistry are available as electives for the major.
